If you’ve seen a doctor for joint pain, there’s a very good chance (near 100%) that medication was offered as the solution. First, you may try acetaminophen (Tylenol) over the counter, which is often recommended for soreness.
If that doesn’t cut it, you may progress to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are often used as a first-line treatment, even by joint pain “specialists.” If your pain is bad enough, you may even get a prescription for Celebrex, the newer (but not improved) NSAID on the market.
Unfortunately, these three common medications for joint pain are also among the most dangerous, and here’s why …
Excess acetaminophen is a poison to your liver, and overdoses are a leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. It’s not hard to overdose, either. Take a combination of products, multiple doses in a day, or combine the drugs with alcohol and you could be well on your way to fatal liver damage.
Acetaminophen may also cause potentially fatal skin reactions, known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), often without warning.
Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen sodium (Aleve) are examples of NSAIDs, which are notorious for increasing your risks of heart attack (Vioxx, anyone?). And all NSAIDs are hard on your gastrointestinal tract, leading to potentially fatal side effects such as bleeding in your digestive tract, ulcers and perforation of your stomach or intestines.
That’s bad enough … but NSAIDs also disrupt cartilage synthesis and actually speed up the destruction of cartilage and joints.[i] Yes, it’s a sad irony that one of the most common treatments for joint pain in the United States may actually cause your joints to break down more quickly.
Celebrex is also an NSAID, although it belongs to a “newer generation” known as cox-2 inhibitors. To get an idea of just how dangerous these drugs are, every other cox-2 inhibitor (including Vioxx and Bextra) has been removed from the market because of their unacceptably high risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart events.
Celebrex is not immune, however. Taking 400 mg of Celebrex twice a day for about 33 months may increase your heart attack risk by 340 percent. Researchers noted “an increase in risk by a factor of two or three” for myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, or cardiovascular-related death among people taking Celebrex, compared to placebo.[ii]
Other common adverse reactions include abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, peripheral edema, indigestion, accidental injury, dizziness, sinusitis, upper respiratory infection, rash and sore throat. Elevated liver enzymes can also occur, as can fatal gastrointestinal events and skin reactions.
