The patient says, “Doctor, it hurts when I do this.” “Then don’t do that!”
We laugh… but there’s some truth there, isn’t there? Case in point in today’s funny video…
Of course no children were (seriously) harmed in that video, but part of what makes it so funny is when Harry puts his finger in his younger brother Charlie’s mouth again, AFTER he had already bitten him! You’d think he’d know better after the first time.
But that’s human nature. We often repeat the same mistake over and over, never learning the lesson. Often the simple answer is staring us right in the face. Like don’t put your finger in your brother’s mouth again if you don’t want him to bite it.
How do you apply that lesson to back pain? By getting to the root cause of your pain and changing the behavior that is causing it.
Sure, we can keep on taking stronger drugs to block the pain. Maybe even go in for surgery. But the real answer to your back pain is typically something much simpler: stop doing what’s causing the problem.
Like eating right instead of feasting on junk food.
Drinking more water instead of soda, coffee, or beer.
Getting more physically active instead of sitting around in a chair day and night.
When back pain strikes, don’t continue the activities that made your body vulnerable to weakness in the first place. And when it comes to back pain, that almost always involves muscle imbalances.
Correct the activities that are causing them, and with some simple exercises and stretches that take care of existing muscle imbalances, you can have your life back free of back pain again in no time.
Remember Henny Youngman’s one-liner:
“Doctor, it hurts when I do this.” “Then don’t do that!”
