Inside your body are trillions of enzymes, which are necessary for your body to perform biochemical reactions (including those that help you to breathe, break down food and even see). As the encyclopedia Britannica states about enzymes, “They are indispensable to life.”[i]
Indeed. And knowing you have trillions of them, you might think you’re set for life. However, while trillions sounds like a lot, your body requires millions of biochemical reactions to keep you alive day-in and day-out.
The enzymes work by speeding up these biochemical reactions significantly – keeping a pace that’s fast enough for your very survival. Enzymes can perform up to several million catalytic reactions per second.[ii]
Meanwhile, your body’s manufacture of enzymes slows down with age, declining at a rate of up to 13 percent per decade after you reach puberty. Eventually, you will likely reach a state of enzyme deficiency, and this time may coincide with many symptoms and conditions blamed on “aging.”
For this reason, a proteolytic enzyme supplement can be an invaluable health tool from middle age and beyond (and even sooner if you’re struggling with health issues related to inflammation and pain).
There are many proteolytic enzyme supplements on the market, but I can confidently say that our Heal-n-Soothe® systemic proteolytic enzyme formula is the most powerful you will find. In fact, since we first formulated Heal-n-Soothe® in 2007, we’ve carefully been making adjustments to make it even better. Here are seven reasons why you simply won’t find a better proteolytic enzyme supplement than this.
7 Reasons Heal-n-Soothe® is the Best
1. The Potency is Second to None
Heal-n-Soothe® was first formulated in 2007. In 2010, we switched manufacturers to incorporate a new, lower-heat processing technique. At this time we also doubled the dose of enzymes contained in the formula… for the first time. Our latest and most powerful formula has double the dose again – which means Heal-n-Soothe® now has four times the enzymes it did in 2007.
In each 3-capsule serving, you now get 750 milligrams (mg) of systemic enzyme blend. The addition was so significant in volume that we had to literally make room in the capsule. There simply was not enough volume in the capsules to double the enzymes without taking something out. And so, we removed the vitamin E and reduced the citrus bioflavonoids and ginger to allow enough room for more enzymes. We also added a 50-milligram dose of alpha-lipoic acid to address nerve-based pain.
But there’s one more critically important thing you need to know about enzymes. You don’t measure it’s potency in milligrams (mg), micrograms (mcg) or International Units (IU) like vitamins, minerals and other supplements.
That’s because enzyme potency is not measured by weight or mass. It’s measured by potency, or active units. The measurement unit used varies by type and function of the enzyme.
That’s why we list both the overall weight of enzymes and the potency of each individual enzyme right on the label. Some manufacturers try to hide what you’re actually getting omitting the specialized active units.
When it comes to Heal-n-Soothe®, you can see right on the label that the concentration of enzymes, per single capsule, makes it more potent than any other product on the market.
2. A Blend Like No Other
When we talk about the systemic enzymes in Heal-n-Soothe®, we’re not just referring to one type of enzymes. Not even close. Heal-n-Soothe® has five different enzymes, carefully chosen because each is triggered to go into action at different times and for different reasons. This includes:
- Protease AM
- Protease 6.0
- Alkaline Protease
This spectrum of enzymes sets off a cascade in your body, each working toward the same goal of pain relief and healing but in slightly different ways. You may, for instance, have a balanced level of two of these enzymes but be lacking in the other three. Most people do not know which enzymes they’re deficient in, so having this blend is the best way to catch any missing links (and, for the record, most people are deficient in many different enzymes, which is why most people respond very well to enzymes in general).
Within this spectrum of enzymes are those from both plant and fungal (mushroom) sources. Both of these enzyme sources function on a comprehensive level in your body, but fungal enzymes work to break down more excess fibrin in your body while plant enzymes work more on the inflammation. And together they both work better.
Finally, enzymes are triggered to go into action by both heat and acidity levels. The enzymes in Heal-n-Soothe® work at different acidity levels, so you’re really covering all of your bases.
3. They Have Longer Staying Power in Your Gut
The proteolytic enzymes in Heal-n-Soothe® are made from mushrooms (Aspergillus melleusand and Aspergillus oryzae). This allows them to survive in a wider pH range, which means the enzymes will live longer in your gut and be able to make it into your bloodstream for systemic effects. For instance, research published in International Immunopharmacology found that bromelain enzymes remain intact and proteolytically active within your gastrointestinal tract.[iii]
The same cannot be said about animal enzymes, which are very sensitive to temperature and acidity, and, unless they’re coated, they won’t survive.
If you buy enzymes coated in “pharmaceutical lac glaze,” you should know that it’s often made from secretions from the female Lac insect. While probably not overtly dangerous… it’s certainly not appetizing to think about.
The insect resin (sometimes called “beetle juice”) is used to protect pills in your stomach, hide odors in pills and also make pills easier to swallow.[iv] If your enzymes do not have such a coating, they may even contain artificial sweeteners to make them more palatable when they hit your tongue.
4. It Has Better Anti-Inflammatory Results and is Better Tolerated
In a head-to-head study of animal-based proteases (serrapeptase from silkworms) and protease from Aspergillus melleus (fungus), the fungal enzymes had better anti-inflammatory results and were also better tolerated than the serrapeptase, with less or no gastric distress reported.
5. An Incredible Herbal Blend, Too
Heal-n-Soothe® not only has a blend of five enzymes that work synergistically to boost your health… it also has a blend of seven additional herbs that combine to form a supplement like no other. This includes:
Boswellia serrate is a tree with amber-colored resin that is often used in incense. Also known as the frankincense tree, boswellia is used in Ayurvedic medicine and has also been used historically in Africa.
The resin of the tree has powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-system effects and has been most widely used in the modern times for treatment of arthritis. However, it’s also been used for asthma and ulcerative colitis and is even being studied for possible anti-cancer effects, including the treatment of brain tumors.[v]
The research is quite clear that with Boswellia’s anti-inflammatory properties also comes a fair amount of pain relief. In one study, Boswellia was found to reduce both the intensity and frequency of headaches in people with chronic cluster headaches.[vi]
Rutin is a powerful phytochemical that lends a yellow-green color to plants. Rutin fights inflammation, making it useful for a variety of painful inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. It’s been shown to help inhibit the release of inflammatory histamine from cells, making it useful for helping to suppress chronic inflammation as well as allergic reactions.[vii]
Plus, rutin has anti-thrombotic properties, which means it blocks the action of a key protein involved in the formation of blood clots. Research suggests rutin may help prevent heart attack, stroke and venous clots that cause deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.[viii]
Devil’s Claw is most widely known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and pain-relieving properties, although it has other unique attributes as well, including antioxidant properties.
Devil’s Claw, in a daily dose of either 50 mg or 100 mg harpagoside (the active component of Devil’s Claw), reduced back and neck pain more than a placebo. At a standardized daily dose of 60 mg, Devil’s Claw reduced back pain about the same as a daily 12.5mg dose of the painkiller Vioxx.[ix]
People treated with Devil’s Claw (along with turmeric and bromelain) reported significant improvements in osteoarthritis pain. The researchers concluded that these natural anti-inflammatories may be a “valuable and safe alternative to NSAIDs in patients suffering from degenerative joint diseases.”[x] Research also shows Devil’s Claw effective for treating arthritis of the spine, hip and knee.
Ginger is valued for relieving gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea. It also contains antioxidants and potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols, which have been found to help reduce pain and improve mobility in people with chronic pain.
It works by decreasing the amount of prostaglandins, which are what cause you to feel pain. In other words, it does what NSAIDs and other prescription pain meds do, but in the way nature intended it to do so… without the side effects!
The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has proven to be an incredibly effective anti-inflammatory. It works by inhibiting multiple pro-inflammatories, including COX-2, prostaglandins, nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-12. That makes it effective against inflammatory conditions like IBD, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and atherosclerosis.
That also includes chronic pain, which is most often caused by such pro-inflammatories as COX-2 and prostaglandins. One study showed that curcumin is far safer, more precise, and had fewer side effects than aspirin for shutting down inflammation responsible for chronic pain.
According to Dr. Ajay Goel, Director of Translational Genomics and Oncology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, curcumin has been the subject of over 9,000 studies and been found helpful in the prevention and/or treatment of many diseases including cancer.
Bioflavonoids protect your body at the cellular level from environmental pollutants, and prevent cholesterol from forming plaque in arteries, reducing the formation of blood clots. In addition, citrus bioflavonoids aid in the absorption of vitamins and act as important anti-oxidants. They also inhibit collagenase and elastase, the enzymes responsible for the breakdown of connective tissue.
Mojave Yucca Root
The yucca root is rich in phytonutrients, including saponins and resveratrol, which have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Traditionally, yucca has been used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. According to research in the Journal of Inflammation:[xi]
“It has been postulated that saponins may have anti-arthritic properties by suppressing intestinal protozoa which may have a role in joint inflammation. Yucca is also a rich source of polyphenolics, including resveratrol and a number of other stilbenes (yuccaols A, B, C, D and E). These phenolics have anti-inflammatory activity. They are inhibitors of the nuclear transcription factor NFkappaB. NFkB stimulates synthesis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which causes formation of the inflammatory agent nitric oxide.
Yucca phenolics are also anti-oxidants and free-radical scavengers, which may aid in suppressing reactive oxygen species that stimulate inflammatory responses.”
6. Only Two Safe Flow Agents Added: Rice Bran and Water
Every single supplement in the world has to use an additive to get their active ingredients in the capsule. We only use the minimum required, and for Heal-n-Soothe® we only needed to use two such additives: rice bran and water. Other products, for comparison, may contain any number of questionable additives intended not only as flow agents but also to cover up and/or improve the smell, taste or appearance of their supplement.
7. Made to Order and Tested for Optimal Potency
Heal-n-Soothe® is made to order, tested and produced on a six-week basis, ensuring freshness and optimal potency. Heal-n-Soothe® is produced in a CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) facility that follows the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory guidelines. According to the FDA:[xii]
“CGMPs provide for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. Adherence to the CGMP regulations assures the identity, strength, quality, and purity of drug products by requiring that manufacturers of medications adequately control manufacturing operations.”
Further, Heal-n-Soothe® is tested by a third-party lab on a random basis, further supporting our goal and mission to have only the highest quality products available.
