Hidden Danger of Heating Pads

When your back is aching, heat is a great way to get some relief. But do you know what you’re putting into your body when you use a traditional electric heating pad?

Sure, you’re getting heat which may provide some relief. Unfortunately this type of radiant heat is only going to penetrate about skin deep… but there’s something else penetrating much further: an electromagnetic field (EMF).

All electric devices produce electromagnetic fields. That’s the same reason why you should avoid living in a house near high voltage power lines or sleeping in a bedroom where the electrical line current enters your home.

Electromagnetic fields as we know them today are a fairly modern invention as the harnessing and use of electricity has become commonplace. And, according to the EPA, they’ve been linked to leukemia, lymphomas, and cancers of the nervous system.

Various standards have been set by different agencies, states, and countries so it’s hard to know exactly how much EMF is “safe.” The best rule of thumb is to minimize your exposure. The EPA proposes your exposure to EMF should be no higher than 1mG (milli Gauss).

Low budget heating pads can create massive amounts of EMF exposure right next to your body which penetrates deep into your tissue (much farther than the heat you feel) potentially causing cancer and other health issues.

On the other hand, our far infrared heating pads provide safe, deep penetrating, healing heat with virtually zero EMF…

Hello. I’m a massage therapist and was wondering if the emf issue relates to table warmers as well, and if there is an alternative I can use.

Thank you for all your wonderful articles!

Would the far infra-red heating pad be a problem with Atrial Fibrilation?

  3. Admin says:

    Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your post and query. We would advise you to check with your doctor/healthcare provider if you can use the heating pad with your condition.

    Thank you

    Hi Carrie,

    Thank you for your query.

Yes, the emf issue relates to table warmers as well; conventional heating elements within a pad will emit an EMF.

    Thank you

Can you use a far infrared heating pad if you have had by-pass heart surgery. I read something about this in the instructions on a far infrared booklet. Why would this be dangerous?

  6. Steve says:

    Meg,

That is a question for your physician as only they know your complete medical history and only then can answer that question for you…

What we have listed are precautions and if you fall into one of those categories we suggest that you consult your physician, the issues could be many but they are all based on individual circumstances, thus you have so consult the one person that knows the answer, your physician…

Do heated mattress pads release EMF’s as well?

Thank you for the information. You confirmed what I had heard about heating pads and expanded my knowledge about the power lines. Do you know anything about the “click heat” heating pads? I have an infared heating pad & it stopped working a month or two ago (I had it for about a year but had very heavy use). I went back to my electric ones short term & then was introduced the ones you click to activate & boil to make it go back to the liquid form. I am just concerned about possible BPA exposure since it does not state they are BPA free & they are also made w/PVC I believe. I don’t know it the chemical exposure to my skin can cause issues, especially with the heat being transferred. I was initially using them directly on my skin, but began using a thin fabric. The effect is not nearly the same (much more therapeutic w/o any cover). Please advise if you can. Thank you & God bless!

NOTE: I plan to look into a possible warranty I have or if I can get my infared one fixed. However, it never did the job for neck pain, as it is still & can’t wrap around my neck.
