Cortisone Shots for Sciatica

Sciatica pain bringing you down? This condition is quite common amongst adults ages 30 and older, and many people look towards cortisone and other steroidal shots for relief. Some doctors or experts will tell you that cortisone injections are a sure fire way to eliminate sciatic pain. However, if you take a closer look, this form of treatment might not be all that it is cracked up to be.

Basics of Cortisone Shots for Sciatica

Cortisone, is actually a steroid that is produced in the body and is designed to help the body manage stress. Synthetic cortisone is usually injected in the inflamed area of the body and is typically more potent than the natural cortisone produced in the body. One important note here is that the cortisone does not directly address the causes of your sciatic pain; it only helps reduce the amount of inflammation.

Pros and Cons of Cortisone Shots for Sciatica

Many people do get temporary relief from cortisone shots. The relief may last several days or sometimes even a few weeks. These shots or injections can be painful. Physicians will often use numbing agents like Lidocaine to help numb the area of injection. There are some side effects associated with cortisone shots. Some people experience heightened pain after the shot. In rare cases, cortisone shots can lead to infections. If you feel like you are experiencing side effects from a recent cortisone shot, please contact your physician.

Cortisone Shots Versus Other Sciatica Treatments

There are other ways to treat sciatica without having frequent cortisone shots. Remember, the idea behind these shots is to attack the inflammation that is contributing to your pain. Reducing inflammation is definitely an integral part of getting relief. You can also reduce inflammation in the entire body by taking natural anti-inflammatory supplements. These natural anti-inflammatory agents can be found in products like Heal-N-Soothe. Click on the link below to learn more:

Have been treating my sciatica (for 4 months) with physiotherapy, massage, exercises (every day at home) and Naproxen which result is minor improvement. As it is debilitating and keeps me from activities I love, am now going to discuss a cortisone shot with my doctor, which I understand can be effective for 4-6 months. Anecdotal stories from previous sufferers say that one day it just disappears – but it can come back.
