Stages of Osteoporosis

Stages of OsteoporosisIf you are suffering from osteoporosis, you are not alone. Millions of women (and men) also face challenges associated with this condition. To summarize, osteoporosis is one of the most common forms of bone disease and can lead to weakened and fragile bones. In fact, nearly half of all American women over 50 years of age, will suffer from some form of osteoporosis. The commonality being, that women of this age are also experiencing major changes like menopause. Bone density studies are used to determine the severity of Osteoporosis. Men over the age of 70 also experience similar bone loss.

How to Prevent Osteoporosis

We have all heard the term, “Milk Does a Body Good”. We will leave that debate for another day, but it is important to understand the role that calcium plays in keeping your bones strong. If you are in the early stages of osteoporosis, you will want to make certain lifestyle changes to counter the effects of this bone loss. You can take calcium supplements and make sure that your nutrition program includes all the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Milk is not the only way to get calcium. So, if you are not a fan of milk, seek other sources of calcium like fish, cheese, yogurt, flax seeds, and green leafy vegetables.

Being Diagnosed with Osteoporosis

If you have been diagnosed with an advanced stage of Osteoporosis you may be prescribed medication. Bisphosphonates can be taken orally or intravenously and are used to treat Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is considered progressive as it can worsen over time. It is common for slight fractures to occur first, and then the bones become weaker there after. Weak bones can lead to more serious injury.

Preventing Osteoporosis

Although you can not completely prevent your bones from weakening, you can sure stack the odds in your favor by paying closer attention to the foods you are eating. A healthy diet and active lifestyle now will help you live a pain free life in the future.
