Sciatic Nerve Treatments

Located in the lower back, the sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerve systems in the entire human body. Sciatica is the term used to describe the symptoms a patient experiences when the sciatic nerve has become pinched or compressed. They can include severe pain, tingling and numbness that radiates through the lower extremities.

Sciatica can be caused by a number of different things. Sudden injury like a car accident can cause things to become misaligned and put pressure on the nerve. Additionally pregnancy is often a major cause of sciatica. The added weight throws balance and posture off and also pushes things out of place, causing pain.

A herniated disc can also be a major cause of sciatica. The spine is cushioned by gelatinous discs between each vertebra which are meant to protect the spinal cord and absorb the impact of walking and basic movements and. Degeneration, aging and sudden injury can cause these discs to rupture and become dislocated, causing them to press on the sciatic nerve when this happens in the lower back.

Even things like poor posture and weakened muscles can allow things to become dislocated and put stress on the sciatic nerve.

So, how can you deal with sciatica? Lots of ways! Over the counter pain relievers can help, especially anti-inflammatory medications like Aleve or Ibuprofen. They will reduce swelling, which will in turn relieve the pressure in the sciatic region.

Try getting a massage. Massages are an excellent way to relieve tension in the low back and help increase blood flow by stimulating the muscles in the area.

Hot and cold therapy can also help big time. Try using an ice pack or even a bag of frozen vegetables for 20 minutes or so to help reduce swelling. Then use a heating pad to encourage nutrient and oxygen rich blood flow to the area to promote healing. Heat will also help relax away tension and ease the pain. For more deep heat penetration, try an infrared heating pad. The Healthy Back Institute offers this state of the art technology which allows heat to go deep into the affected muscles for more lasting relief than a typical heating pad can provide. Once you relieve your sciatica, what can you do to keep it from coming back? Well, try doing stretches and exercises regularly to help strengthen your core. If you learn to support your upper body properly you’ll be much less prone to injury down the road. Even walking or simple leg lifts done consistently can help prevent weeks of pain in the future.

Also, focus on improving your posture, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting at work. Naturally the spine takes on an “S” shape. However, sitting for extended periods can create a “C” shape. To prevent this, try a lumbar cushion which will support your lower back, promote good posture and relieve pressure on sensitive areas. The Healthy Back Institute offers a wide variety of lumbar support cushions. Visit their Web site today to find one that’s right for you.
