Alternative Treatments for Fibromyalgia

What are some alternative treatments for fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a common medical condition in which patients experience pain over their entire bodies, along with tenderness in their joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues.

Fibromyalgia pain is seen in people of all ages, especially among women aged 20-50 years. It has been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression, anxiety, and other symptoms. However, the exact cause is still unknown.

The locations where fibromyalgia pain occurs are called tender points. The pain ranges from mild to severe and spreads out into the body from these tender points.

Possible triggers for fibromyalgia include:

• Physical or emotional trauma.

• An abnormal pain response – for example, brain areas responsible for pain may react differently in fibromyalgia patients.

• Chronic Inflammation in the Body

• Sleep disturbances.

• An infectious agent, although none have so far been identified.

Alternative treatments for fibromyalgia include dietary supplements, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care and biofeedback.

Dietary supplements include 5-hydroxytryptophan, which is believed to elevate mood; magnesium, whose levels are believed to be deficient in this condition; and melatonin, which improves sleep and may ease fibromyalgia pain.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese traditional medicine and a holistic treatment for fibromyalgia that is believed to rebalance the flow of vital energy through the body. It involves stimulating specific points on the body by inserting thin needles into the skin. When a slight electric current is passed through the needles, it’s known as electro-acupuncture.

Both methods are considered effective alternative treatments for fibromyalgia, significantly reducing fatigue and anxiety among patients and temporarily easing fibromyalgia pain as well.

If you suffer from this condition, trying it for yourself is the best way to find out if it works for you.

Massage is very effective in reducing muscle tension and easing muscle pain. It can improve circulation and range of motion, and is believed to boost the production of natural painkillers. Massage may ease fibromyalgia pain and help patients sleep better.

Chiropractic care is a very common alternative treatment for fibromyalgia pain, because it reduces pain levels and improves cervical and lumbar ranges of motion.

Based on the principle that the human body is self-healing, spinal adjustments are used to increase mobility between spinal vertebrae, which may be restricted or displaced out of their normal position.

Biofeedback is an emerging alternative treatment for fibromyalgia used to individualize reduction of stress. This interesting mind/body relaxation technique uses electronics to measure stress-related responses in the body.

The idea is that people can use information about their body’s internal processes to learn to control those processes themselves. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that biofeedback works and may help to relieve many types of chronic pain, including fibromyalgia pain.

An additional way to help aid in treating fibromyalgia is to reduce the overall amount of inflammation in the body.
