Lower Back and Hip Pain and Discomfort

The human anatomy is truly a very impressive compilation of cells, organs, bones, nerves and muscles. It is amazing to see how the body communicates and operates. Whether we take note of it or not, our feelings directly reflect on how well our body doing. A measurement of good health can be how much pain and discomfort we feel in any part of the body. Most people have or will experience some degree of back pain during their lifetime. Unfortunately many people suffer from back pain more regularly than they should. Lower back and hip pain are something that can totally ruin your everyday activities and your social and professional relationships.

The back is a very important part of the body. Your posture is connected to your back because that is where the vertebral column or spinal column is located. Your backbone is something that needs to remain intact for you to limit your chances of having pain. The spinal column is made up of several vertebrae or bones, thirty-three to be exact. These bones alone don’t make up our backbone. Between the vertebrae are circular discs or joints that have cartilage. These discs keep the bones from rubbing against each other and from moving to other areas. The flexibility of the cartilage allows the spinal column to bend without breaking, enabling us to bend and twist.

When your discs or bones are disrupted this can trigger back pain. When either the discs or the bones are disrupted, degenerate or have an outgrowth, this can put pressure on the nerves located in the spinal column. These nerves help to inform the brain on what the body should do. Nerves in this area can affect if you are able to be mobile or not. There are many occurrences that can add pressure to the nerve roots and effectively cause lower back and hip pain. Suffering from stenosis, fractures, osteoarthritis or a herniated disc are some of them. While some of these issues are a result of old age, others are caused by trauma, injury, sporting activity, childbirth and unsafe lifting techniques. Lower back and hip pain can also be caused spinal conditions, tumors, infections as well as sacroiliac joint pain.

The sacroiliac joint is located in between the pelvis and the sacrum, which is on the lower end of the backbone, just above the coccyx. When this joint is injured it can cause the pelvic and hip area to be extremely uncomfortable. Sacroiliac joint pain can cause a lack of mobility and make everyday activities like rolling over in bed and putting on your shoes difficult.

The fact that many people have back problems is a sign that most people don’t know how to prevent back pain. To prevent lower back and hip pain you should be careful about the kinds of activities you participate in. Doing activities that have less physical impact is advised. Lifting objects in the appropriate manner is a good way to avoid muscle and back injury.
