Constipation: How to Get and Stay "Regular"

Irregularity can lead to a host of problems including back pain

Death begins in the colon.

And constipation is a major warning sign of trouble.

Constipation isn’t just when you feel pressure to have a bowel movement but can’t go, either.

Infrequent bowel movements (three or less per week) as well as straining or a sensation of hardened stools during more than a quarter of your trips to the bathroom also indicate a problem.

Severe constipation warrants a trip to the doctor as it can be a sign of colon cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and other major medical conditions.

However, it’s also a fairly common malady that can often be corrected with some simple lifestyle changes:

  • Increase your fiber intake
  • Drink more water
  • Avoid unnecessary medications, many of which can cause constipation including opioids, antidepressants, antacids, antihistamines, and diuretics among others
  • Evacuate at the first sense of urgency — holding it in can cause trouble
  • Avoid regular use of laxatives as your body can become dependent on them to go
  • Consider a colon cleanse to free obstructions and improve your health

Finally, if you’re currently experiencing constipation, here’s a simple acupressure technique that can help.
