Low Back Pain

Dealing with pain is never easy—and low back pain is one of the worst. For many people, it is chronic, and doesn’t end. There are many methods of dealing with it, and ways to make it worse.

Finding out the back pain was caused in the first place is part of the solution in getting rid of it. First, figure out the true cause of the pain.

Were you in an accident, did you wrench your back badly in the gym, or just take a bad step on an icy sidewalk? Or, is your back pain a result of a genetic issue that has been passed down from another generation?.

Muscle spasms can cause problems in the lower back. Sometimes the spasms are caused by something as simple as a low level of magnesium—other times, they are brought on by low levels of other electrolytes.

When these muscle spasms occur, nerves down in the lower back region can be pinched, creating the pain. Doctors can treat the pain through several methods—gentle methods of therapy such as aquatic therapy, massage or through the use of muscle relaxants.

Yet another possible method of treatment that many people don’t consider to deal with problems in the low back is two forms of Chinese medicine—acupressure, and acupuncture.

Acupressure is the practice of using specific points on the body, applying pressure on them and relieving pain in another area of the body that way. For many people it works quite well. Acupuncture works in a similar way—but uses needles to achieve the same effect.

If you took a fall on the ice to cause your low back pain, there are some other alternatives to relieve the pain. Bed rest will help, but using ice to relieve the swelling is a good start. Then, alternating heat with the ice, the muscles will loosen just a bit. This method is going to take some time, and the doctors will likely prescribe a muscle relaxant as well to help with the spasms.

Low back pain being caused by an accident where the vertebrae have been crushed or badly broken will be treated differently. There will be several different things done to treat that type of back pain.

One of the first things that will be done is the prescription of pain medicine for that severe back pain. The use of the prescription pain medicine to kill the pain in the lower back will help for the short term, but not the long term.

Another option to deal with back pain is surgery. While this is one of the more severe options available, it does exist.
