These ladders and scaffoldings around the building help the firefighters reach the flames. And before long, the fire is out.

What if the fire crews decided to leave without taking down their ladders and scaffoldings?
What if these stiff structures were left in place for years or even decades?
They would block the doors and windows of the building. People would have a hard time getting in and out.
Car driving around the building would get stuck in traffic jams. And all activity around the building would SLOW DOWN.
This little story describes how inflammation works in your body. The building on fire is like an injury.
The stiff ladders and scaffoldings are like scar tissue – it sticks around long after it’s needed and slows down your movement.
Scar tissue is made from a special substance called fibrin – a sticky protein deposit that is left over after an injury has healed.
And just like with the building, fibrin deposits can cause a lot of problems – and pain – if they are not properly broken down.
When you have a wound or injury, fibrin creates a mesh around the area to help new tissue grow.

Normally, your body creates special enzymes – called proteolytic enzymes – to break down the fibrin once your body is done healing an injury.
