Shutting Down the “Oxy Express”

Southeast Florida is well known for its warm weather, long sandy beaches, and in more recent years, the hundreds of “pain clinics” where pain pills are handed out like candy.

Law enforcement made another sweep of pill mills this week

Well, not exactly handed out. Sold… cash & carry only, please.

Sales of prescription drugs through these pill mills has been booming with Florida doctors writing ten times more prescriptions of oxycodone than all other states… combined.

This easy drug accessibility has addicted drug users and out-of-state black market dealers flocking to the area in droves. Although the clinic business is booming, they have earned the area a not exactly Chamber of Commerce-friendly nickname: the Oxy Express.

Just this week over 400 federal, state and local law enforcement officers made a sweep to shut down a handful of clinics and arrest some of the more egregious offenders who sold the pills blamed for an estimated seven deaths a day in Florida alone.

But here’s what I don’t get. These deaths are blamed on prescription drug abuse. But what about the thousands who die every year… from using these drugs exactly as prescribed?

Where’s the outcry against that?

The truth of the matter is… pain pills ARE big business. And when it comes to the Big Pharma industry responsible for churning them out, you get all kinds of resistance when you try to propose natural cures for pain… remedies so safe few notice even minor side effects.

Maybe that’s because there’s no way to patent most natural cures… and if just anyone can go out and use them to get better without going through their doctor or pharmacy with their ties to the drug industry, well that kind of cuts a bit too close to profit margins for big businesses reliant upon the drug ’em and cut ’em conventional medicine mentality.
